The 'Rainbow Region'
Explore the rural towns and sleepy villages set in the lush and particularly scenic hills to the west if Byron. The area is famed as a haven for alternative or, shall we say, a more ‘green’ culture. Nimbin the self proclaimed ‘Alternative Capital of Australia’, The Channon and Bangalow are the favourite towns to visit in this region, with a range of festivals and events held in and around Nimbin, and the popular The Channon and Bangalow Market once a month.

Rainforests & Parks
When you've had enough of lying on Byron's beaches (as if that's possible), you can explore the many natural wonders surrounding it. The ever-present volcanic plug of Mt Warning is a favourite hike (see Hiking in the Explore section). It can be reached by driving into Murwillumbah and following the roads to the small village of Uki. There are also a few waterfalls in this area, including two in Nightcap National Park, Minyon Falls and Protester Falls, which are a short walk from the picnic area at the end of Terania Creek Road. The drive to these falls is lovely itself, as it follows a creek through some pleasant rainforest and a narrow valley. You can also visit the Broken Head Nature Reserve south of Byron and see the Two Sisters rock formation.

Bruswick Heads
Just north of Byron Bay is the town of Brunswick Heads, which also makes for a super day trip. The pub is a good place to relax for a meal by the river and it has some quieter beaches.
Lennox Head
Between Byron Bay and Ballina is a enjoyable coastal drive which passes through the quiet town of Lennox Head. If you stick to the coastal roads you’ll find easy access to some ripping beaches!
